June 26, 2014 WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team will represent the United States at the 2014 World University Match Racing Championships, held in Trentino, Italy with the event starting Sunday, June 29 and continuing through Saturday, July 5 on Lake Ledro.
The Hoyas will represent the United States and will participate as one of 19 teams in the coed category, all hailing from 14 countries with Australia, Great Britain, Singapore, Italy and Canada each sending two squads apiece.
“We’re honored to be representing the United States,” Head Coach Michael J. Callahan said. “We are competing against some of the best collegiate sailors in the world so we are hoping for good winds and a lot of racing.
“To sail against some of the best international teams helps get great global exposure for the University and the sailing team.”
Sailing for Georgetown will be Nevin Snow (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic), a finalist for the Everett B. Morris Trophy (awarded annually to the Marlow Ropes College Sailor of the Year), with a crew of Alex Post (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy), AJ Reiter (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) and Katia DaSilva (East Greenwich, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey). Snow was named a Coed All-American following the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) trio of national championships while DaSilva was named a Crew All-American for her efforts. Post earned honorable mention accolades.
Georgetown earned the opportunity to represent the United States at the World University Match Racing Championship by winning the ICSA Match Race National Championship in November, defeating the likes of the College of Charleston and St. Mary’s College (Md.) in the top three.
The event is part of International University Sports Federation’s (FISU) program featuring 24 World University Championships in 2014, an event that takes place every two years.
