SR Appendix C: PCCSC Sail Policy

PCCSC Standing Rule Appendix C

PCCSC Sail Policy

Effective January 1, 2019

Narrative

To ensure fair competition, the PCCSC has conference-approved sails that must be used by all teams competing in the varsity divisions of conference events. These sails are available for stand alone purchase through North Sails, or are often included as a discounted option with boat purchases from Zim Sailing or Laser Performance. As these sails are built in the same factory, on the same shop floor and from the same patterns and materials, they are all approved for competition.

This policy seeks to identify and clarify which sails meet these requirements so that teams may make informed decisions on which sails to purchase while also ensuring that our racing remains strictly one-design.

The policy also establishes a PCCSC Sail Registry, where each team is asked to register their new sails intended for varsity competition.

Any questions about sail eligibility should be directed to the PCCSC Conference Commissioner.

PCCSC-Approved Sails

In accordance with Section 5 “Measurement” in the ICSA 2017 Collegiate Dinghy Class Rules, all teams competing in the varsity divisions of PCCSC events must use PCCSC-approved sails. These sails must meet the following criteria:

Approved Builders

All sails shall be manufactured by North Sails - Sri Lanka and may have badging/logos from North Sails, Laser Performance or Zim Sailing.

Description

Mainsail

  • Three (3) battens, including one full top batten
  • Floating tack slug (to be inserted into mast track)
  • Has tack logo of North Sails, Zim Sailing (w/ North Sails Logo) or LaserPerformance (w/ North Sails Logo)
  • Includes ‘Made in Sri Lanka’ tab sewn into tack seam

Jib

Notes: Some older generations of these sails are built from approximately 5.5 oz. cloth while the newest versions are built from 7.2 oz. cloth. Both of these constructions are considered legal for PCCSC use.

Sail Identification and Numbering

Each main and jib used in varsity competition shall have the following identification for scoring and race administration purposes. See the list below for sail numbers assigned to each school.

Mainsail

  • The number must appear in 12” size (standard “Crazy-8” for a Laser) or larger on the TOP of the mainsail, with the Starboard side number being placed just above the top batten pocket (using the batten pocket seam as a guide) and the port side being placed just below the batten pocket seam.
  • Number will appear on both sides (starboard side higher).
  • Place these numbers 3 inches from the leach of the sail.
  • Leave a numbers width or 2 inches of space between two-digit numbers.
  • Any other numbers and/or identifications may appear below the second batten of the main.
  • STRONGLY SUGGESTED: School Code as identification
  • For example, CMA in large text on each side of the sail, below the 2nd batten.

Jib

  • This number shall also appear in a 6” or 9” height on the Starboard side TACK of the jib.
